Foreignisms we will miss…

We are back in the good old U.S. of A!  Whew, that was a quick five weeks.  We are onto the next part of our summer vacation adventure…a little U.S. travel.  So some reminiscing on our time in Europe with lots of things we will miss.

  • The creative license with the English language (I am sure the smoothie would like to leave home, see the world and lose its naiveté!).

  • ABBA is played on the radio as much as Lady GaGa. And even Oompah bands play ABBA (yes, they are groovin’ to Waterloo in this photo!).

  • Don’t know what to do with a historic ruin? Put a playground in it! Yes, if you look closely there is a playground in there and the ruin is from like 200 A.D. We would have that behind bullet-proof glass in the U.S.!

  • Outdoor cafes. Eat and drink outdoors in any weather (some cafes even provided BLANKETS when it was chilly). Cafes, you had me at slanket!

  • Flower shops look like elaborate gardens that spill onto the sidewalk.

  • Random sculptures with no explanation. Yep, those are statues not real lizards! And you better believe they scared the bejezus out of me.

  • Bikes are transportation EVERYWHERE outnumbering cars. I even rented a bike in Giverny…I totally felt like the Wicked Witch of the West (remember her on the bike!?!?!) but I LOVED the basket and the bell!

  • Unusual sweets. A whole store FULL of these crazy marshmallow yummies! There were fun candy stores everywhere with the queues of delighted kids begging for a fantastic sugar fix.

  • Art. History. Architecture.  All around every corner.
  • Wine is cheaper than water and the red wine is sinfully delicious.
  • Cucumbers are a standard sandwich item (like lettuce in the US).
  • Life rolls at a snail’s pace.  You can enjoy dinner for hours, that is just fine!
